How to Plan a Multi-Generational Family Vacation? (3)

Finding Suitable Accommodations for Everyone Option A: Rent a house with enough bedrooms for everyone. This can save costs for large group travel. Option B: Rent rooms in the same hotel. Decide on a family-friendly resort that everyone likes and book enough rooms for each person. Option C: Choose the same city and then book accommodations suitable for each group. Perhaps some group members want to use hotel loyalty points, or grandparents want to be close to the golf course. Others may consider budget and prefer staying in an Airbnb with a fully equipped kitchen. The options are endless.

Discussing and Packing Items Each Person Will Bring Clothing – Check the weather forecast to understand what clothes your trip requires. Every family has its own packing style, but at least bring the right items. Shared Toys – If there are many children, be sure to bring some toys, but also plan for sharing. Coordinate to see what each family brings. Special Items – Do you need Airbnb linens? Pack-and-plays for toddlers? Weather-related Gear – Be sure to bring rain gear (just in case), but what about venturing to higher altitudes? Bring snow gear, swimsuits, and hiking gear too? Bring along some cards, puzzles, or board games for quality family time. There’s no need for everyone to overpack.

Getting Everyone Settled In Don’t plan activities for the first day, just give everyone a chance to relax. Book dinner for the first night or plan for takeout. Depending on where you’re coming from, there may be significant jet lag. This also accounts for delays in flights, car rentals, and other things that may happen on travel day. If you’re planning to cruise (ABCroisière), be sure to stay in a hotel the night before departure.

Patience is Key Vacationing with multiple generations can be stressful due to many activities. Even simple things like driving to a local vacation spot can add new layers for multiple families. Stay patient and enjoy the trip together. Make new memories and cherish the time spent with grandparents or grandchildren. After all, that’s why you initially planned this trip!
