Piazza Navona

Navona Square: Rome’s Baroque Gem with Fountains and Festivities

Located in the historic center of Rome, Piazza Navona stands as the city’s most beautiful Baroque square. Today, the square comes alive with a vibrant atmosphere, attracting street performers and artists in the evenings. At its center, three renowned fountains—the Fountain of the Four Rivers, the Fountain of Neptune, and the Moor Fountain—contribute to the square’s fame.

With its Baroque architectural style, Piazza Navona is one of Rome’s most captivating landmarks. Built on the site of the former Stadium of Domitian, which was once the epicenter of games and festivals, the square retains its historical charm. The remnants of the ancient stadium, the enchanting color palette, and spectacular sculptures make it a popular destination in Rome.

The square remains lively with open-air cafes and various events, maintaining its vibrant ambiance. The three monumental fountains—Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi, Fontana del Nettuno, and Fontana del Moro—add to the allure of Piazza Navona.

In the heart of the square, the Fountain of the Four Rivers takes center stage. Designed by Bernini, this fountain features four personifications representing the major rivers of four continents: the Nile (with its head covered, as its source was unknown at the time), the Ganges (depicted in a relaxed posture), the Danube (turning to stabilize an obelisk), and the La Plata (with a twisted head). As you explore the square, challenge yourself to identify these four iconic figures. If you can’t, no worries! Enjoy the local atmosphere and capture some memorable moments with photographs.
