FamilyPlus operates through the collaboration of the National Association of Elected Representatives for Tourism Regions in France, the Association of Mayors of Mountain Resorts in France, and the Federation of Green Holiday Resorts and Ski Resorts in France. Each organization is responsible for destinations with different resource characteristics, and to be certified, a destination must join one of these three organizations.
FamilyPlus classifies certified destinations into four categories based on their resource characteristics:
Famille Plus Montagne (Mountain Destinations)
According to the decree issued on December 22, 2006,
destinations must have high mountain skiing areas.
Family Plus Mer (Seaside Destinations)
Destinations must be located by the sea, with one or more beaches, including at least one beach equipped with coastal activities that are regularly operational.
Family Plus Ville (City Destinations)
City destinations must have a population of over 10,000 permanent residents and feature distinctive historical, cultural, and artistic heritage.
Family Plus Nature (Nature Destinations)
Destinations must have natural heritage and outdoor activities, but the permanent resident population must not exceed 10,000.
The three organizations each have their own responsibilities in managing FamilyPlus.
The program is jointly administered by the National Association of Elected Representatives for Tourism Regions in France, the Association of Mayors of Mountain Resorts in France, and the Federation of Green Holiday Resorts and Ski Resorts in France. A management committee has been established to address any disputed matters, consisting of representatives from the three organizations and industry experts. The committee authorizes a third-party auditing firm to conduct audits every three years.
The daily operations of the four categories of destinations are managed by the three organizations based on their functions. The committee collaborates with the three organizations on various tasks, including supervision of the use of the FamilyPlus brand, management of destination self-assessments, tracking and handling of tourist complaints, tourist satisfaction surveys, development and revision of relevant standards, audits of new certified destinations and suppliers, and triennial reviews of certified destinations and suppliers.
