Introduction to Cultural Customs in France

France, one of the oldest countries in Europe, possesses a rich and ancient cultural heritage. Whether tracing back to prehistoric cave paintings, or to the Roman conquest of Gaul in the 1st century BC, France has played a significant role in the development of culture throughout history.

Throughout the evolution of Western cultures, France has often served as a pioneer or exemplar. Its classical tradition was once a model for many European nations. The 18th-century Enlightenment movement, which popularized ideas of “reason” and “science,” originated in France and introduced concepts of “liberty” and “equality.” These progressive ideas not only led to the French Revolution but also spread bourgeois values across Europe.

In the subsequent centuries, Paris, France’s capital, remained a center of European culture until the mid-20th century. Despite the rise of the United States as a superpower after World War II, France’s cultural influence was not entirely replaced. The country continued to innovate in literature, fine arts, theater, music, and architecture. Paris retained its status as the global hub for fashion, and French cinema competed head-to-head with Hollywood. Paris was also a breeding ground for innovative ideas in existentialist philosophy and literature, absurdism in theater and anti-traditional novels, structuralism, serial music, and electronic music.

France’s national territory forms an almost symmetric hexagon, a source of pride for the French people. Within this land, diverse characteristics have shaped the unique national character of France: sometimes mysterious and eccentric, sometimes elegant and unpredictable, yet always organized, harmonious, and cohesive. The French temperament leans towards rationality, enjoying conceptualization, theory, and pure contemplation. Simultaneously, they have a penchant for expressing ideas, emphasizing the logic and analytical rigor of understanding reality. While appearing indifferent to order, discipline, and work, the French approach their work with seriousness and dedication; they possess lively and romantic personalities, fostering strong family bonds.

French cuisine has had a profound influence on the Western world, with its cooking methods and culinary etiquette forming the backbone of Western dining culture. France is also rightfully known as the kingdom of cheese, boasting 36 cheese production regions nationwide and over 300 varieties, making it unparalleled globally. French wine is another renowned aspect of its culinary heritage. Thanks to the unique climate, soil, and environment for cultivating wine grapes, French wine regions are found throughout the country, with notable areas including Bordeaux, Burgundy, and Champagne.

French people also enjoy coffee, but their focus seems to be more on the ambiance and style than the taste. They prefer to visit cafés, sipping a small cup of coffee slowly while reading or engaging in lively discussions, making it a leisurely pastime. Due to this unique coffee culture, French cafés are found on every street corner. Some cafés, such as “Café de la Mairie,” “Le Dôme,” and “Café de la Paix,” were once gathering places for artists. The columns and paintings of Le Dôme café are even listed as French national cultural heritage and are protected.
