It seems like there’s a new European railway line opening every day, which is great news for tourists who enjoy scenic views and also benefits the environment.
After the successful launch of a stunning new coastal route, Italy is once again making a move this year by introducing three new routes. These railway lines, part of a new brand called FS Treni Turistici Italiani, aim to provide unique railway experiences for domestic tourists, going beyond the usual point A to point B commute.
The three routes are named Lusso (Luxury), Espressi (Express), and Regional Comprehensive Trains, operated by the Italian state-owned railway company Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane (FS).
The long-distance luxury route, set to launch in 2024, will feature the Orient Express-inspired service called La Dolce Vita. The Regional Comprehensive service will be a slower, cost-effective route that focuses on showcasing Italy’s magnificent landscapes, passing through towns and villages with distinctive culinary traditions. The Express trains will transport passengers from major cities to tourist destinations, such as Milan to the Tuscan coast, and will include overnight trains that loop around the southern region. Some of the journeys will utilize refurbished vintage carriages, complete with facilities like meeting rooms and ski storage.
Italian Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani stated during the press conference that this plan is an important part of Italy’s “modern tourism strategy,” aiming to guide tourists to explore the country’s traditions and smaller communities, not just popular tourist destinations. These routes will not only showcase lesser-known areas of Italy but also encourage visitors to explore the country in a more sustainable way, making railway travel an integral part of their vacation. The expected launch of these routes is in 2024.
