Italy is considered one of the most charming summer tourist destinations in Europe, with beautiful coastlines, picturesque landscapes, pleasant sunny weather, and delicious gelato and aperitivo, providing visitors with almost everything they need for a vacation. In the past, getting to the Amalfi Coast in Italy was not convenient, especially by air travel. However, now this destination known for its colorful villages, beaches, and sparkling blue sea finally has its own airport – the Salerno Amalfi Coast Airport, which is expected to start operations in July.
The Salerno Amalfi Coast Airport is not a newly built airport, but rather has a history dating back to 1926 and has undergone several transformations. Initially, it served as a military airbase, flight school, fire center, and private airport, and then transformed into a commercial hub from 2007 to 2016. Now, the airport is about to welcome commercial flights once again.
The airport is located about 45 kilometers from the town of Amalfi and 21 kilometers from the city of Salerno. When summer flights commence, the Spanish airline Volotea will be the first airline to operate at this airport. Flights to Nantes, France, and Cagliari, Sardinia, will be launched in July, followed by additional routes to Verona and Catania in September. More airlines will join operations in the future, but the upgrading of the airport hub will be done in phases, with corresponding services gradually introduced.
Carlos Muñoz, the founder and CEO of Volotea, stated that the airport opening is “an important moment for the region.” Despite the negative impact of overtourism on the Amalfi Coast in recent years, local business owners still welcome this news.
The project aims to alleviate the pressure on Naples Capodichino International Airport, which set a record of welcoming 12.4 million passengers in 2023. Once the Salerno Amalfi Coast Airport is completed (expected by 2043), it is expected to handle up to 6 million passengers annually.
