Traveling to Finland: What You Need to Know (2)

What should I wear?
If you’re traveling in winter, wear a layered winter coat, thermal underwear, a warm hat, thick socks, and gloves. This way, you’ll be prepared even if the temperature drops below zero. If you didn’t manage to gather these winter clothes before coming, don’t worry! You can buy them in Finland. Additionally, if you’re participating in guided outdoor excursions or other winter activities, warm winter clothing is usually included in the tour package and available for borrowing. If you’re visiting Finland in autumn or spring and plan to explore the outdoors, it’s essential to have waterproof shoes. For summer, the clothing needed for travel is similar to that for other Northern or Central European countries, so pack a few casual outfits, like lightweight pants, shorts, and T-shirts.

What is “Everyman’s Rights” in Finland?
Finland has many great concepts, one of which is “Everyman’s Rights.” This right gives everyone the freedom to roam freely in nature without needing permission from landowners, allowing activities in forests, hills, lakes, and rivers. This unwritten rule was originally invented by Finns living in this vast, forested, sparsely populated country and has been continuously improved over the years. Some key points: you can freely pick wild berries and mushrooms but not apples or berries from others’ property. You can paddle a canoe or camp but must keep a respectful distance from others’ residences. Fishing requires permits in many areas. Leave no trace and restore the place to its original condition when leaving. Simply put: enjoy the beauty of nature but do so responsibly, respecting nature and others’ property.

Is Finland a safe place?
It’s safe to walk the streets and parks during both day and night. What should you do in case of an emergency in Finland? Dial the toll-free emergency number 112.
